Asa Akira
The Japanese-American icon who swept every major award - AVN Female Performer of the Year, published author, director, and cultural phenomenon
Biography
Asa Akira (born Asa Takigami on January 3, 1985, in Manhattan, New York City) became the defining Asian-American performer of her generation, winning Performer of the Year honors at five different award shows - AVN, XRCO, XBIZ, AEBN VOD, and Urban X. With 689+ films and dual Hall of Fame status (AVN 2019, Urban X 2017), she transcended adult entertainment to become a published author, podcast pioneer, and cultural commentator.
Born to Japanese immigrant parents - portrait photographer Kenji Takigami and business executive Taeko Takigami - Asa lived between cultures. She spent ages 6-13 in Tokyo before returning to New York, attending the United Nations International School and later Washington Irving High School. After graduating in 2004, she worked as a dominatrix at 19, then transitioned to stripping before meeting Gina Lynn, who introduced her to adult entertainment.
Her 2006 debut was a girl-girl scene with Gina Lynn, followed by her first boy-girl scene with Travis Knight for Gina Lynn Productions. She signed with Vouyer Media before going freelance, earning acclaim for her role in David Aaron Clark's "Pure" (2009). The 2013 AVN Awards ceremony marked her apex: co-hosting alongside Jesse Jane and comedian April Macie, she won Female Performer of the Year - becoming only the third Asian performer to do so after Asia Carrera and Stephanie Swift - and was the most awarded person of the night.
Beyond performing, Asa built an empire: directing debut "Gangbanged 6" for Elegant Angel (2013), exclusive Wicked Pictures contract (2013), hosting both Pornhub Awards ceremonies, authoring "Insatiable: Porn - A Love Story" (2014) and "Dirty Thirty" (2016), editing the anthology "Asarotica" (2017), co-hosting the DVDASA podcast with artist David Choe, hosting reality competition "The Sex Factor," and writing for Men's Health. She appeared on Family Guy (2017) and The Eric Andre Show (2014). Now a mother with partner Keiran Lee, she identifies as a feminist and continues shaping conversations about sexuality and empowerment.

Career
Asa Akira's path to adult entertainment wound through New York's underground scene. After graduating high school in 2004, she worked as a dominatrix at 19, developing the confident persona that would define her career. A transition to stripping led to her meeting performer Gina Lynn, who became her industry mentor. Their 2006 girl-girl scene launched Asa's career, with her first boy-girl following for Gina Lynn Productions. She signed with Vouyer Media, then went freelance, building a reputation for intensity and professionalism that drew attention from major studios.
The 2013 AVN Awards represented Asa Akira's coronation. Co-hosting alongside Jesse Jane and comedian April Macie, she won Female Performer of the Year - only the third Asian performer ever honored - and left as the ceremony's most awarded person. That same year she won XRCO Female Performer of the Year and swept awards across XBIZ, AEBN VOD, and Urban X. Her directorial debut "Gangbanged 6" for Elegant Angel showed creative ambition. In October 2013, she signed an exclusive contract with Wicked Pictures, debuting with "Asa Is Wicked." The "Asa Akira Is Insatiable" series for Elegant Angel became her signature showcase.
Asa leveraged her fame into a multimedia empire. Her 2014 memoir "Insatiable: Porn - A Love Story" (Grove Press) earned critical praise; "Dirty Thirty" (2016) and anthology "Asarotica" (2017) followed via Cleis Press. The DVDASA podcast with artist David Choe reached young audiences discussing sexuality, career, and relationships. She hosted "The Sex Factor" reality competition (2016) and "Hobbies with Asa Akira" for The Hundreds (2015). Her Men's Health column brought sex positivity to mainstream media. Hosting both Pornhub Awards ceremonies cemented her status as the industry's premier ambassador. Appearances on Family Guy and The Eric Andre Show proved her crossover appeal. Now a mother, she continues advocating for performer rights and sex-positive culture.
